Jake R. Kelman, Psy.D.

Clinical Psychologist

There are times in all of our lives where we feel overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by feeling sad or anxious, by problems at work or school, by strains in our relationships with others, or for reasons that can be hard to identify. Even though we can show tremendous resilience in the face of adversity, sometimes we confront challenges that we have difficulty overcoming on our own.

In therapy, I aim to help you flourish despite the stressful events in your life. Making change can be hard, and it takes strength and courage to seek help. Choosing the right therapist requires careful deliberation. A good fit matters.

The Therapeutic Experience

I am a licensed clinical psychologist (CA License # PSY28512) with experience providing services in a broad range of settings to people dealing with disparate concerns. I work with adults, adolescents, couples, and families battling mood, anxiety, interpersonal, and life transition challenges. As an integrative therapist, I draw on techniques from cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and interpersonal therapies. I work collaboratively with my patients to identify treatment priorities and tailor my approach to fit their specific needs.

Whether you are struggling with feeling depressed or anxious, have endured a significant loss or undergone another difficult change in your life circumstances, or are working to cope with other sources of stress, my aim is to help you become a more satisfied version of yourself – a happier you, essentially. I work with you to help you lead a more fulfilling, meaningful life by alleviating pain, helping you build confidence, sharpening your coping skills, and facilitating an improved understanding of yourself.

Helping people achieve their goals is the most rewarding part of my job. I look forward to working with you on moving towards the life you seek.

ABOUT
EXPERIENCE

Dr. Jake Kelman is a licensed clinical psychologist who works in the Bay Area. He has a private practice in Palo Alto and also founded the Mental Health Services Clinic at Menlo College in Atherton, where he served as the Director for six years, running a training program for doctoral students in clinical psychology from the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium. While he has a strong interest in training, supervision, and program development, his core passion lies in clinical work.

Dr. Kelman trained at both Stanford University, where he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Vanderbilt University, where he completed a pre-doctoral internship through the Vanderbilt/VA Consortium. He has experience in a wide array of clinical settings across both the Bay Area and the greater Nashville area, including academic medical centers and the athletic departments at Stanford and Vanderbilt, the Veteran’s Hospital (Tennessee Valley Healthcare System), college counseling centers, and a community mental health clinic.

Dr. Kelman has held several research positions at Stanford University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He conducted clinical research examining the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy for adolescents with mood disorders and studied the personality factors associated with mood symptoms in this population. He is trained in evidence-based clinical interventions, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, interpersonal therapy, and mindfulness-based techniques.

POLICIES
TREATMENT
Treatment typically consists of weekly 50-minute appointments. During our first few sessions, we will discuss your primary concerns and work together to clarify your needs and goals. I will offer you my clinical impressions and recommend a treatment approach and plan. These initial sessions also give you a chance to evaluate whether I am the right fit for you. Naturally, we will continue to assess your progress towards your goals and, if need be, modify our focus to meet your evolving needs.
FEES

My fees are consistent with customary rates for psychologists in the Bay Area. Payment is made at the time of session by check, cash, or credit card. Please contact me for rates.

CANCELLATION POLICY
If you need to reschedule or cancel an appointment, I request that you do so as soon as possible. You will be billed for missed appointments that are not cancelled at least 24 hours in advance, except in emergencies.

INSURANCE

I am an out-of-network provider, which means I am not on any managed care insurance panels, with limited exceptions. However, many PPO insurance companies do offer partial or full reimbursement for out-of-network mental health care. I am happy to provide you invoices that you can submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement of your payment to me. I encourage you to call your insurance company and inquire about your out-of-network mental health benefits.
